The territory
Being that Montalcino’s hill formed in different geological eras, its soil presents changeable characteristics, which constitutes a rich environment of diverse splendour, different every time. The lower areas are made up of soil which formed by detrital transport with a deep active stratum of the Quaternary a bit loose. As you climb, the soil in enriched by skeleton, while the active stratum is reduced due to the soils, formed from the decomposition of original rocks, particularly Galestro and Alberese.
